Bandage Pads for Horses
Horse bandage pads are a great companion to equestrian bandages, and they play a fundamental role in different situations during your horse training and keeping. There are different bandage pads; some offer extra padding, others also provide extra shock absorption, and some combine several features and help make bandages and wraps more versatile.
In the old days, grooms used to place floor clothes or used rugs underneath stable bandages for extra padding, compression, and some of the same things bandage pads do, with their limitations, of course. Great grooms do the best for our horses, and the idiom “he who knows, knows” perfectly applies to bandage pads. Over time, the equestrian industry realised the practicality of adding something padded between the wraps and the horses’ legs, and they developed products that turned out to be much more practical and effective than the old and good floor clothes, which now we know as bandage pads for horses.
There are different types of bandage pads, depending on the intended use. For example, Stable Bandage Pads for horses offer extra cushioning and comfort. They are ideal for keeping your horse comfy while resting in the stall or the paddock, traveling, and in other activities where the horse is not working. They also provide extra support, help distribute the bandages’ pressure, avoid undesired pressure points, and protect sensitive skin from irritation.
Another common type of bandage pads are exercise bandage pads. They offer the same benefits as their stable bandage pad counterparts with an extra feature: they are made of highly breathable fabrics that enhance air circulation during exercise and absorb moisture and sweat, preventing overheating, and keeping horses’ legs dry. Horse exercise bandage pads can be worn underneath stable bandages and are ideal for horse’s sensitive to pressure, returning to work after an injury, or just turning regular stable bandages into exercise bandages for moderate training. Some horses have sensitive skin and are easily irritated by exercise bandage rubbing. Exercise bandage pads are the perfect solution for those horses, preventing chaffing and discomfort.
Lastly, some brands offer horse bandage pads that can help turn a pair of multi-purpose horse wraps or long and moderately elastic polo bandages into stable ones. For example, brands like Kentucky Horsewear® make versatile bandages that can be combined with their Stable or Working bandage pads for different uses.
When applying a horse bandage pad, it’s important to avoid leaving wrinkles that may cause pressure points or pinch the skin, which can lead to injuries besides being extremely uncomfortable. Ensure the horse’s legs are dry and clean. Even a tiny piece of wood shaving can cause a lot of discomfort to your horse if it gets between the bandage pad and the leg. When fitting the bandage pad over the bandage pads for horses, remember to avoid excessive pressure and, even when bandage pads help eliminate excess pressure points, you still could restrict proper blood circulation if you overtighten them. In case of doubt, always ask for help from your trusted veterinarian or a certified instructor.
