Turnout Rugs

Turnout is essential for every horse. Time outside is fundamental for your horse's physical health and crucial for your horse's emotional well-being. While your horse is out in the field, you want them to play, roll, and graze comfortably. A horse turnout sheet is an essential item for your horse for added warmth, protection from wet weather, and a barrier to insects, harsh UV light, and mud. 

Turnout rugs are waterproof, breathable, and designed for outdoor use. These horse turnout blankets have different materials, cuts, and functions than stable rugs. There is more room for shoulder movement, and the belly and leg straps may vary slightly from a stable rug. 

Horse turnout rugs also have a different denier value. Denier is the individual thread thickness used to create the outer shell of turnout rugs. Higher denier values describe a thicker, more durable fabric that will also feel heavier and stronger. You will see denier values from 600D and 1200D to 1800D and beyond. The amount of padding and insulation, measured in grams of fill, is calculated like a stable rug and a turnout rug. The greater denier is why a 100gm turnout rug feels heftier than a 100gm stable rug. 

Like stable rugs, turnout rugs are of various weights. The no-fill turnout rug, sometimes called the 0g turnout rug, is a simple outer shell with a simple lining, similar to a rain sheet but suitable for play and grazing. A step up from there are lightweight sheets, such as the 50g turnout rug or the 100g turnout rug. The medium weight turnout rug will have approximately 200g of poly fill. The heavyweight turnout rugs are the warmest outdoor sheets and have 300g or more of fill.

Turnout rugs offer many special features to protect your horse and extend the life of the rug. Moisture-wicking linings are available to help dry a damp horse. The outer layer often features ripstop fabric to enhance durability. Attached fasteners or rings will secure an under rug for added warmth.

For your horse's comfort, look for padded withers, tail guards, and gussets near the shoulder for freedom of movement. Hi visibility stripes and accents give turnout rugs an added layer of safety, too.

Medium Weight Turnout Rugs

A 200g turnout rug is a medium weight horse sheet and perfect for all weather conditions. With more fill than a lightweight, they are warmer and can pair with a rug liner for even more warmth as the weather changes.
