A well-fitted and smart show jacket is an essential element of your show or hunt day attire. Discount Equestrian understands the need for fashionable, high-quality, and functional show jacket options that meet all budgets.
Equestrian show jackets are the outer layer of your horse show or hunt attire. Primarily worn in formal horse show settings, a competition jacket encompasses a wide range of styles for many disciplines. Professional rider turnout needs to flatter the rider and not distract from the horse.
All horse disciplines have a signature style of horse riding show jackets. Show jumping jackets are shorter than other disciplines, with the option for more sparkle, colours, and fashion-forward tailoring. A dressage show jacket will be longer at the back, sometimes with long dressage tails, and will usually be black or navy, to preserve tradition. Recent changes to dressage rules do now allow a few more colour options.
A tweed show jacket is usually worn while hunting and showing, also sometimes at the lower levels of the 3-day event. You may also hear tweed show coats called hunt jackets or hacking jackets. Adults sometimes wear tweed jackets for hunting in the autumn and maybe switch to a heavier wool hunting jacket such as the Equetech Hunt Wool Frock Coat for the winter. Mostly, children will stick with their tweed jacket throughout the hunt season. If you are looking for a complete selection of clothing suitable for hunting, take a look at the Hunting Attire category.
The styles of the show jackets greatly influence the fabric and construction. Show jumping jackets are thinner and more flexible and might be a nylon blend for added flexibility over fences. Tweed jackets and some traditional riding jackets use wool or a wool blend to withstand the weather. Dressage jackets are found in all types of fabrics.
It's tradition for show jackets to be solid, dark colours. Newer, stylish colours give riders more options to match their personality and horse. A black show jacket is always a classic. You will also find grey, navy, and even burgundy show jacket hues. Some trendy show jackets may have subtle checks or pinstripes.
A tweed show jacket is the exception. Natural browns and greens combine in tweed patterns to honour the hunting traditions.
A competition jacket for equestrian sports may have fabulous features. Look for crystal buttons or sparkly highlights on collars and pockets to add glamour. Velvet accents are popular on collars, too. More minor hints of colour can be found in piping and trim, often with beads. Look for vented panels, stretch fabric, zippers instead of buttons, and zippered pockets as functional features. If you are show jumping, you can really go all out on the bling! Also look out for other features that are mostly found in competition jackets used for show jumping, such as vented panels and mesh fabrics used on the arms to allow for ventilation during the warmer months.
When choosing your new show jacket, consider sizing based on your decision to wear a body protector underneath or on top of your coat. The type of show shirt you feel most comfortable in will also influence your choice of competition jacket, be it tailored or loose fit. Coats are specifically tailored as ladies' competition jackets, child's show jackets, or men's show jackets.
Many top brands of show jackets include garment bags, and the fabrics may even be machine washable. Review your discipline's rules on colours and styles allowed in the show ring.
