Equestrian Hunting Attire

Fox hunting was an activity that involved more than just chasing a fox; it was an opportunity to socialise, share horsemanship experiences, and sometimes showcase the attendants’ horses and their riding skills. In the early 19th century, a fox less alternative to hunting called drag hunting became popular among riders who were interested in the social and equestrian aspects of fox hunting but weren’t keen about chasing and killing a live animal. This sport attracted the attention of the British Army and several cavalry academies seen it as a way to improve and test riders’ skills. Both fox hunting and drag hunting involved jumping natural fences and ditches and were the inspiration for modern disciplines like show jumping and cross country.

As animal welfare awareness continued to increase, fox hunting became less and less common until it was finally banned in the UK twenty years ago. However, the ban didn’t affect drag hunting, which remains an excellent opportunity to socialise, face challenging courses, and have lots of fun.

At the beginning of a drag hunt, all riders gather at the start, wearing their hunting clothes and waiting for the traditional horn blowing that marks the beginning of the hunt.

In the old days, a scent was deployed over the track, and the hunt was led by tracking dogs, similar to traditional fox hunting. The scent is made by substances like aniseed oil, which has a strong odour and prevents the hounds from confusing it with possible foxes that may be in the area. Currently, drag hunts may not involve hound dogs; many events use signals to lead the way, and the riders go behind the drag master, who is the person in charge and usually impeccably dressed in formal hunting attire. Drag masters know the path perfectly and set the pace of the hunt. Some complex or populated events have several drag masters to assist participants and watch everything develop smoothly and safely.

The course distances, number, and height of fences vary depending on the level and category of the event, but they usually are between 10 and 21 miles. Sometimes, the organising members establish a time limit, which can go from one to over two hours, depending on the nature of the event. Some hunts have lunch breaks or pauses, making them longer.

After completing the course or when the horn marks the end of the designated time, drag hunts usually offer a social gathering for the participants to spend an enjoyable moment, talk about the hunt, share old riding stories, and have a good time with fellow equestrians. Wearing hunting clothing is essential to honouring tradition and being in tune with young and experienced riders.

Formal Hunting Clothing

Drag hunting is a traditional sport, and even when there are no winners or losers, it has its rules and a dress code that is dictated by each hunt club or organisation. The typical formal hunting attire includes a hacking jacket or hunt coat, preferably made of tweed or a traditional fabric and sober colours, white or beige breeches (some informal or beginners’ events allow using Jodhpurs), a riding helmet, a stock or tie, a white shirt, and field boots or tall black boots. Some organisations may allow using more informal clothes for hunting, like riding chaps with Jodhpur boots. Although horse riding gloves are often optional, they add an extra touch of class to the hunting attire.

Drag hunt courses have optional trails and/or jumps for different levels of riders and horses, and it’s not mandatory to jump all fences which is important if slowly introducing children to hunting. Overall, all jumps are inviting, but it’s important to note that most obstacles are fixed, so it’s important to be prepared and wear proper and comfortable hunting clothes, as you would for a show jumping or cross-country course. It’s also crucial to keep in mind that drag hunts cover large distances, and even if you can set your own pace, the courses are much longer than show jumping and cross-country ones, so try to compose your hunting attire with as many breathable clothes as possible. Also, it’s good to remember to wear proper hunting clothing for the season; some events are held on cold-freezing days, while others are in spring or summer. Also, don’t forget how unstable weather can be, so be prepared to expect sudden temperature changes and showers.
