Flies are pests we could do without! As horse owners and riders, during the summer months, these pesky flying bugs get everywhere from irritating the horse in the field around his eyes, muzzle and causing him to kick at himself through to flying around our faces while we are riding! Fly Sprays are a must have for every grooming box and tack room. Fly repellents are available in a variety of different presentations and application methods.
At Discount Equestrian we offer a range of market leading fly sprays from Natural or Citronella based repellents through to roll on and gel or cream application products for horses who dislike spray. Brands such as Effol, Leovet, Equine America and Absorbine offer lasting protection from flies including midge, bot, horsefly, house, stable and black flies. Not only does this help prevent irritation and the need to rub and scratch but it will protect any cuts and grazes from further fly damage while remaining kind on the skin and coat. Use of an effective fly spray can help prevent spread of infection, transmission of fly borne disease and development of conditions such as sweet itch. Most fly sprays will need to be reapplied daily (many twice daily) so remember that the peak times of day for fly activity are dawn and dusk, it is particularly important to protect your horse during these period with focus on the vulnerable areas of skin such as the area around his eyes and ears, the muzzle, under the tail and underside of the abdomen.
Finer breeds such as Thoroughbreds with smooth coats and thinner skin as well as foals and youngstock are particularly susceptible to irritation from flies due the sensitivity of their skin, they can be prone to swelling around fly bites and as such it is important to choose an effective fly repellent to maintain their well being. If you compete, whether pony club, local showing or affiliated, it is a great idea to have at least two bottles of fly spray – one in your trailer and one around the yard so you are never caught without.
