Keeping your horse warm and cosy during cold, wintry nights and frosty winter mornings is important. Stable rugs are the perfect solution for enhancing your horse's comfort while in the stables, no matter what the changing UK weather has in store! Stable rugs are for indoor use and offer varying levels of warmth depending on the volume of fill used inside the blanket. Stable rugs are usually not waterproof and are often quilted.
When choosing a stable rug for your horse, decide what weight of horse stable blanket you need. A horse or pony stable rug will be light, medium, or heavy, depending on the grams of filling. Filled rugs range from 50g to 400g of filling and allow you to match the climate to your horse's needs. Using a stable rug with neck boosts the warmth factor, too, and can make your 200g medium weight stable rug seem like a 300g stable rug.
Horse stable sheets do not have any fill or waterproofing. Instead, stable sheets create a barrier against dust and make for a useful under rug.
There are choices for every budget, ranging from simple and cheap stable rugs to fancy designs with different options. You might find shoulder pleats to reduce rubs, cross-belly surcingle’s for maximum coverage, or anti-static lining. Leg straps or rear soft cord fillet straps are another option to consider. Some lightweight rugs have attachments to secure under rugs and prevent slipping.
Some stable rugs include neck pieces, or you may choose a horse scarf to add to your horse's rug. These scarves cover the poll and continue over the withers while covering the shoulders. Cushioned bibs help prevent shoulder rubs and can be purchased separately, too. Decorative piping and various quilt patterns round out your options.

Lightweight Stable Rugs
A 50g stable rug or a 100g stable rug is considered a lightweight stable rug. These rugs will add a layer of comfort and warmth to your horse and are thin enough to be used as an under rug. In warmer weather, the breathable fabric won't overheat your horse, and in cooler weather, it helps protect against wind and chilly air.
DefenceX® System 100 Stable Rug – "This lightweight rug is perfect for slightly cooler days. Made using a durable 600 denier material, its 100g of fill makes this stable rug versatile and useful. The detachable neck cover adds extra protection and warmth. For security, the adjustable cross-surcingles, twin clip chest fastenings, and a fillet string are added."
Medium Weight Stable Rugs
When stable rugs for horses have 150g to 300g of fill, they are considered medium weight. The most popular weight is a 200g stable rug suitable for use alone or combined with an under rug or neck piece. When the weather fluctuates drastically, using layers and neck pieces makes adjusting the warmth for your horse fast and easy, instead of removing rugs to switch to another weight.
WeatherBeeta® ComFiTec Heavyweight Quilt – "This stable rug combines a 210 denier, channel-quilted outer shell and 210T polyester lining with 250g polyfill. The medium weight stable rug also features a touch-tape loop to fold back the neck cover for extra versatility by adjusting the rug into a standard neck style. For safety and security, the front buckle uses the tough tape system, and the belly and tail are secured with twin low cross surcingles and a fillet tail strap."
Heavyweight Stable Rugs
A 300g stable rug, or more, is considered a heavy weight stable rug. Horses that need extra help staying warm benefit from such a rug and might fare best with a 400g stable rug. Extreme weather may also necessitate using a heavy-duty rug.
LeMieux® Arika Stable-Tek Rug 350g - "This 350g rug features innovative materials designed for maximum comfort, breathability, and durability. The soft quilted panels are secured with diamond ripstop material, adding dirt and stain-repelling properties. The central seam construction of this Stable-Tek Rug provides deep coverage without additional seams."
Kentucky® Horseware Stable Rugs with 400g – "This 400g filled stable rug has a 100% animal friendly, artificial rabbit skin lining. This soft padding prevents rubbing and stops the lining from attracting hairs. Thanks to the soft hairs of the artificial rabbit skin, this rug retains body heat and allows your horse to enjoy a shinier coat, too. Due to the high warmth-to-weight ratio, this stable rug offers excellent comfort. The 600D high tenacity polyester outer fabric with a diamond quilted pattern makes the fabric hardwearing and prevents shavings from sticking to the rug."
