First played in Asia over a thousand years ago, polo has developed into popular equestrian sport. Polo was played by the cavalry as a form of training exercise in the nineteenth century too!

Played on a field, polo matches involve four ‘plays’ that include seven minutes of activity. The aim of a polo match is to score the greatest number of goals against the opposing team. There are two mounted umpires who determine the outcome of any disputes. In a polo match, there are two teams of four players. Polo ponies – who can be small horses – require specifically designed saddles, whilst the players wear a helmet and knee guards.
