Stock pins were traditionally worn for safety purposes. When out riding, if a horse sustained an injury, stock pins were used to secure makeshift bandages while they were walked home – likewise, if a rider injured an arm out riding, stock pins could fasten a makeshift sling until the rider was able to find appropriate medical care. 

Since then, first aid provisions for horse and rider have evolved, so stock pins are now primarily used for decorative purposes.
