As you already know, the purpose of reins is to communicate with and control your horse while riding, leading, lunging, and carriage driving. Reins attach either to your horse’s bit or to their bitless bridle, and they’re available in an astounding array of styles, designs, and materials.

The most well-known, widely used material for reins was traditionally leather, and more recently rubber reins have proven extremely popular. However, thanks to advancements in technology, there are now many different types of reins available in an array of innovative, synthetic materials.

Training reins for example have coloured sections to assist new riders with where to hold onto the rein.  Rubber covered reins offer better grip than plain leather reins, some rubber covered reins are softer and more flexible than others.  Half rubber reins come with rubber on the inside and are very popular as they offer more grip than plain leather reins but when riding it appears that you are riding in plain leather reins.   Plain leather reins and plaited leather reins are typically used for dressage and showing.
