Horse and Pony Reins

Horse reins are the connection between your hands and your horse. The horse's reins connect to the bridle at the bit or the noseband for a bitless bridle.

When learning how to hold horse reins, you need to learn finger placement and pressure. There are also different styles of reins to master. Use long reins for horses when long lining or lunging a horse. A balance rein for horses, also called a neck strap, gives your hands a place to rest for added security.

Grass reins attach to pony reins and prevent horses and ponies from dropping their heads to steal some grass. Training reins are often multi-colored to teach riders where to place their hands.

Reins should be comfortable in the hand.  The most popular are rubber covered as they provide exceptional grip over standard leather reins.  Some are only covered in rubber on one side to reduce bulk and some have bumps or loops of leather at regular intervals to help stop the reins running through your hands - this is helpful if you are riding a particularly strong horse
