Over Reach Boots
When thinking about leg protection, it’s important to remember that the hooves, coronary bands, and heel bulbs are just as delicate as the tendons and suspensory ligaments.
Injuries in that sensitive area can be self-inflicted, as in the case of overreaching and striking, or externally inflicted by, for example, running over a sharp object or a kick from another horse.

Over Reach Boots for Horses & Ponies
When thinking about leg protection, it’s important to remember that the hooves, coronary bands, and heel bulbs are just as delicate as the tendons and suspensory ligaments.
Injuries in that sensitive area can be self-inflicted, as in the case of overreaching and striking, or externally inflicted by, for example, running over a sharp object or a kick from another horse.
Overreach wounds caused by horses’ front and rear feet striking each other. The most common scenario is when a horse’s hind hoof strikes the front leg or heel while in motion, causing injuries and/or bruises on the back of the front legs, most frequently on the heel area. It’s a common misbelief that over reaching can only happen to poorly trained, young and green horses; unfortunately, while it’s true that these horses are more prone to suffer these injuries, well-trained, high-performance horses are not exempt from suffering them. Accidents can happen, especially when moving fast, jumping, or even playing, like bolting at full speed during turnouts. Even perfectly balanced horses can suffer from overreaching due to a minor coordination loss caused by fatigue.
Similar issues can happen when two or more horses are loose in the yard. Accidental steps or even the most innocent and playful bucking can end badly. Also, cuts and lacerations from sharp objects like fence wire are common while horses are hacking or turned out in the pastures.
These accidents can cause from bruises to severe wounds, and prevention is fundamental to minimize the risks and their consequences. Proper training and a good farrier job are good ways to reduce the risks. However, remember that even well-trained, high-performance horses are not exempt from this problem.
As equestrian sports evolved, people noticed the need for protective gear for horses, and devices like polo bandages, tendon boots, and bell or overreach boots became increasingly popular among equestrians. The first bell boots were made of leather, and in the late 1960s and 70s, the first rubber pull on over reach boots started to be seen in the show jumping scene. Today, you can still find these boots at affordable prices. The only downside is they are pretty difficult to fit and remove because they are moulded in one piece, so you have to stretch them to pass them through your horse’s hooves to fit and remove them.
Today, bell boots are most commonly known as over reach boots, and you can find innumerable models in different materials and colours to protect your horse from overreaching. At Discount Equestrian, we have a wide variety of overreach boots and bell boots for all budgets and disciplines and match your horse’s garment to perfection.
There are two main types of overreach horse boots:
Fully closed: They cover the hooves’ heel and front, protecting the horse from self-indulged and external injuries. They are excellent for daily use and have multi-purpose uses like training, turnout, and travel.
Open-front: These overreach boots for horses offer ultimate protection of the heels, thanks to the shock-absorbing pads made of strong materials like carbon fibre. They are also lightweight and cool because of their open design, which makes them ideal for demanding show jumping, cross-country courses, and dressage tests. However, they are not recommended for activities outside the ring as they don’t offer full protection like their fully closed counterparts.
