A stud girth is typically used in show jumping and cross country on horses who have studs fitted to their shoes.  When jumping on grass you will often find that horses shoes are fitted with stud holes.  Studs can then be screwed into the holes to allow for better grip a bit like football or rugby boots.  The danger when the horse has studs fitted is that when he jumps and he brings his front feet up to his chest that the studs can hit his belly and damage the skin.

The stud girth has a large half circle shape in the middle which sits on the underside of the belly.  This means that as the horse folds his front legs to jump the belly is protected by the stud girth.
