Saddle pad, riser pad, saddle, bridle, boots, what else? Have you ever gone to a competition and realized that you were last minute scrambling to get ready for your class? Or, even if you are only preparing to compete, do you wonder what exactly you need to pack? It’s every rider’s nightmare to run late for a class, but often, the culprit is disorganization and lack of planning. However, oftentimes riders with less experience simply don’t know what to expect. Even those who plan can skip a few points. Our team at Discount Equestrian has come to the rescue by helping you create a list of what you will likely need at the horse show. While you read, try and guess what is an item that most new riders may not even consider bringing.
Tack
First and foremost, make a list of and pack all of your horse’s tack. Otherwise, how will you ride your horse? Make sure to pack your saddle, bridle, numnahs, girth, boots, riser pad or polo wraps, martingale, bonnet and anything else you may need to use. It may be wise to bring extra reins or stirrup leathers. Other items you may need to bring separately are bits, coolers, lunge line, stirrups, saddle cover, saddle soap, towel for your leathers, an extra halter, saddle pad number holder and other more niche items which will depend on your horse’s individual needs.
Reminder: the devil is in the details and it is best to be as prepared as possible before competing. Something that is not commonly known by new competitors is that, on the day of the competition, you will need a saddle number holder. Not only will it make pinning your number ten times easier (a number is used to identify you and your horse from the other competitors), but it will also help you feel that you are much more prepared and competition-ready. Get your A-game on by choosing saddle cloth number holders for any style and price at Discount Equestrian.
Rider Equipment
Most events will not allow you to ride without the proper equestrian equipment. This equipment includes helmet, riding pants, riding shirt, riding boots, show jacket, belt, gloves, and safety vest. Other items you may want to have include hair ties, brush, and mirror. Some of these items hold more priority than others (helmet, boots, jacket, and show pants) but all of these items are best to have if you want to feel your most prepared on show day.
Grooming/Care Supplies
For the competition, it is best to bring your entire grooming bag (with a curry comb, brush, clippers, hoof pick, sweat scraper, braiding supplies, baby powder if you have a grey, and anything else you may think you need). In addition, supplies like blankets, protective boots, buckets, coolers, feed/hay, supplements, fly spray, mucking equipment, soap, hoof oil, towels for your horse, and first aid kit will be must-haves at the horse show.
Documents/Paperwork
Documents and papers are just as important as riders and horse equipment. You will likely require your registration, horse paperwork (such as health certificate), rider paperwork, vet information, insurance, and an extra notebook with a pen.
Miscellaneous
Some items that you may need in a pinch include scissors, a sewing kit, lint rollers, zip ties, duct tape, cash, insect spray, water, snacks, first aid kit, sunscreen, and other items you need for personal use.
Discount Equestrian offers much of the above equipment from bridles to saddle cloth number holders. We offer a wide range of just about anything, and our saddle cloth number holders range from clear holders to ones with black leather lining. Number holders for either the saddle cloth or the saddle itself are often used in dressage competitions to offer a secure, worry free method to display your competition number at the show and certainly provide the most professional look. You may want to match your brown riding boots with a brown dressage saddle pad number holder by LeMieux, or you may simply want to get the job done with the cheaper Equetech Saddle Cloth Holder in the color white.
