Horse Riding Spurs
Spurs have been used in horse riding for centuries. They assist a rider in pinpointing their aids, when precision is required for riding complex dressage tests or taking on challenging jump combinations, for example.
It is of utmost importance that the horse’s welfare always remains the priority. Spurs should never cause a horse pain. Spurs are designed to apply pressure to a specific point on the horse’s side at a definitive moment; that pressure is relieved immediately, as positive reinforcement upon a horse’s correct action. This encourages the horse to become more receptive to their rider’s aids, allowing for improved communication between horse and rider. However, only highly experienced riders should use spurs! If you’d like further advice, Discount Equestrian suggest asking a qualified riding instructor.
We stock a supreme range of spurs, from traditional metallic form to spurs embellished with crystals, as well as other styles of spur made with lightweight nylon. Brands to be discovered in our excellent range of Spurs are Cottage Craft®, Elico®, Freejump®, JHL®, Jin®, John Whitaker®, KM Elite®, Korsteel®, Lorina®, Mark Todd®, Sprenger®, and Tech Stirrups®.
Here’s a sample of some of the bestselling products in our extensive Spurs range:
Elico® Rubber Spur Protectors – “Made from soft, flexible rubber and fits snugly due to the oval cut-out for the spur ends. They will protect boots from damage caused by rubbing, whilst also helping to secure the spur whilst riding.
These Spur Protectors are indispensable when using metal spurs, particularly with zip-backed boots. Supplied in pairs (spurs not included).”
Sprenger® Ultra Fit Extra Grip Spurs Comfort Roller – “High quality spurs made of stainless steel and guaranteed against breakage. With an elegant, fine fastening developed in cooperation with Klaus Balkenhol, these rubber covered spurs provide a better fit and an attractive look that sit perfectly on your riding boots. This unique fit and design eliminates pressure and movement, thus providing correct spur performance and protection for boot leather.”
John Whitaker® Pink Diamante Encrusted Spurs – “Add a little bling to your riding with these Whitaker Spurs boasting four pink 15mm encrusted crystals and branded Whitaker design alongside the inner section of the spurs. These spurs are made with rectangular spur strap holders to allow for a closer feel between your horse and your foot.”
Freejump® Spur'One Round End – “The rigidity of the spur’s outer branch and the first third of its inner branch allow precision of the spur’s position against your horse’s side. The revolutionary articulation of this Freejump Spur makes it possible to maintain this rigidity, ensuring precision while offering incomparable comfort, thanks to the immediate adjustment of the spur to the width of your boot.”
Jin® Rollerball Spurs – “Jin Rollerball Spurs, characterised by an innovative design and only 34g in weight, are produced with a procedure that makes them unique. Rather than being produced through moulding, they are made from solid aluminium, which makes them very strong without the risk of deforming. These spurs have a 35mm neck, including rollerball, and they are available in a wide range of colours, such as brown, fuchsia, gold, and red.”
Elico® Gentle Contact Nylon Spurs – “A gentler alternative to traditional spurs, these PVC spurs with soft-grip ensure a secure fit. Comfortable to wear, lightweight, and flexible. Available in black, black/grey, and blue.”
