According to various historical sources, spurs have been in use since records began – so, spurs were recorded in use as early as the Roman Empire; and allegedly, spurs were even used by the Celts! Nowadays, spurs are designed to suit specific disciplines, such as dressage or jumping. The purpose of the spur is to support subtle leg aids whilst riding, however, spurs should only be used by highly experienced riders who know exactly how to refine the use of spurs to communicate particular commands to the horse they’re riding. Improper use of spurs can sadly result in harm to the horse, causing potentially irreparable damage to their trust in a rider through injury or over-use that results in fear or a deadening of their response mechanisms to a rider’s leg aids.
